<p>The unit was activated as the 366th Fighter-Bomber Wing at Alexandria AFB, LA (later England AFB) in January 1953 with the F-51D initially, but immediately began conversion to F-86s. The wing added F-84Fs in 1954 and an air-refueling capability with the KB-29P, which was later replaced by the KB-50J in 1957. Equipment was upgraded to the F-100D in 1957 and the designation changed to 366th TFW in July 1958. The wing was inactivated in April 1959, but reorganized at Chaumont AB, France in May 1962, acquiring the Air National Guard F-84F's which remained in Europe when the mobilized squadrons were returned to state control. The wing returned to the USA for assignment to Holloman AFB in July 1963, operating the F-84F for another two years alongside the F-100. The 366th commenced conversion to the F-4C in 1965 and moved to Phan Rang AB, South Vietnam in March 1966. The unit transferred north to Da Nang AB in exchange for the 35th TFW which moved to Phan Rang AB. The wing was relocated to Takhli RTAFB, Thailand in June 1972 for four months, prior to assignment to Mountain Home AFB where it replaced the 347th TFW and equipped with F-111F. The 366th received F-111As in July 1977 and EF-111As in November 1981. The EF-111As were deployed to Taif, Saudi Arabia and assigned to 48th TFW (Provisional) for Desert Storm. The unit was redesignated 366th Fighter Wing late in 1991 and began retiring the F-111A. The unit changed designation to 366th Wing in June 1992 as the first and only semi-self-contained air intervention unit. B-52Gs were assigned until 1994, when they were replaced by B-1Bs.
